We’re on discord
I loved Discord from the first time I used it. I don’t know why it feels so different to Slack, maybe it’s the subconscious association of clients vs games; but Discord, for all it’s faults, is a great way to connect with people.
So today we opened a server. Right now it’s mostly a way to make the conversations around our products easier and more accessible. But I’d love it if we can gather a community of After Effects animators who do the kind of work that we are most excited about supporting: narrative, illustrative and character-based animation.
I’ve learnt so much about animation from traditionally trained animators, and although it sometimes feels like After Effects must be a terrible piece of software to work in when you’ve learnt using Animate, TVP or Toon Boom, there are more and more talented character animators coming to Ae and asking how they can make it work for them. On the other side, there are thousands of motion designers and generalists who are drawn to the incredible sensitivity and joie-de-vivre of great character animation, but find that it’s a lot harder to learn a skillset that is both more and less technical than what they’ve needed til now.
Here are some other great Discords for After Effects animators:
Started by the after effects reddit it’s the closest thing on Discord to the Motion Design Slack.
Nick Greenawalt has a habit of making After Effects more fun to learn.
The hype around Skew translated into a busy discord for Sarr.
Adam Plouff and Matthew Sienzant mod the server for Overlord, Timelord, Anubis and co.
If 3D is your thing, Nick and Chad and friends have a server. And it’s not just for C4D.
Non-public discords
There are loads of Discords that want to stay small, and so don’t make their invites public. These can be some of the best and most rewarding groups to hang out in because they feel more personal.
